Everyone is talking about how new virtual reality and 3D technologies are going to change not only how we work but the environment we work in. It can be hard to visualize how futuristic technology can be implemented in current business models, especially when most virtual reality technology today secludes people with headgear.
Matterport has not only been able to create 3D/VR technology that is simple to use, it is also collaborative by nature. This technology showcases how exactly VR and 3D can improve our quality of work and simultaneously save money, which everyone loves. Matterport's 3D and VR solutions allow businesses to virtually transport users to any physical space in the world. And the best part? It doesn't require expensive equipment or a large investment of time or money.
Per Matterport, The 3D Pro2 Camera is the only all-in-one reality capture system that gives you realistic, interactive 3D and VR experiences that feel as real as being there.
In layman's terms, Matterport is a camera that produces 3D and VR environments. Think Google Maps for indoors, but easy to use and quick to launch. An update on virtual tours as we know it.
If you want to know what is actually going on inside the camera, you can keep reading, but if you don't really care about how smart this camera is you can just skip to the next section.
The Matterport Pro 3D Camera uses lidar technology to accurately scan any environment. The lidar technology used in this camera is "an imaging laser scanner that offers longer range, higher accuracy, and outdoor performance in direct sunlight." In order to access these scans, you will need to upload them to Matterport's cloud. This is where your scans will be automatically stitched together to develop a 3D or virtual environment. Once your scan is stitched together, the final product is placed into your account where all of your Matterport Spaces will be held.
Once your space is developed, you have control of privacy and distribution security, streamline workflow engagement and collaborate with clients. You can also edit your models to include guided tours, take measurements, label rooms, and provide product details and contact information.
Now that you have created an image and added context to it, you can now export your images 3D onto your own applications to create a space that is unique and one of a kind.
Awesome, you now have a fully immersive 3D/VR ready environment you cannot wait to show off, so how do you go about using this technology as a business solution?
If you are in real estate, architecture, construction, or any other industry that is centered around physical structures implementing a 3D/VR walk-through tour, floor plan, or dollhouse environment is already gaining popularity. With Matterport, the creation and implementation of these spaces and environments are not only easier, but the finished product is much smoother and more realistic than that of 2D manual photography. The Pro2 3D Camera allows you to capture site progression and accurately make measurements using an integrated measurement tool.
The hospitality industry can also benefit from this technology the same way architects and real estate agents do. Showing an event space to someone, no matter where they are physically located, showing measurements of an event space, or allowing them to see your space designed for different events are qualities that Matterport can add to your sales or marketing process.
Military, doctors and aerospace engineers can all use this technology to help familiarize themselves with their new work environment. Knowing exactly where a certain building is on base, where different operating rooms are located and the VR scans of satellites can help each one of these industries with training new employees and cross-departmental collaboration efforts.
No matter what industry you are in, Matterport can scan your space to create an immersive environment that either can help new employees adapt, or current co-workers collaborate.
At Alex+Tom we have invested in Matterport's Pro2 3D Camera and are building a portfolio of 3D/VR environments. We are able to scan a space quickly and, depending on the size of your space, it is a relatively inexpensive procedure. When we scan your space you will have access to your virtual space within one to two business days for you to highlight on your website or distribute to clients.
We have already created tours for the Waverly Brewing Company, the Stadium Square commercial properties, and even our own office. We would love to collaborate with you to develop a 3D/VR environment that will help your company expand and grow.
